2. Hero Overview

In the barren-lands, tales spoke of tauren sages reaping the essence of dirt. Their consciousness melds with the brown beneath them. The loam becomes the conduit of their mental thought and reality. These warriors were feared for they could summon massive ruptures at their mere whim.So tremendous was their power that their magic leaks out of the earth violently with every spell. Sadly these sages mysteriously faded from the land. When the World Tree was threatened, couriers searched these mighty ones but found just one. A young adept, Raigor Stonehoof, seeksbattle to weave new tales of these shamans.

Earthshaker is well known to be Sentinel's AoE stunner. He's one of the few strength mages in DotA, and he works quite well. Fissure is great in terms of disable, and can be extended into many different uses. His Aftershock and Enchant Totem give him extra stuns. His ultimate, Echo Slam, is the epitome of anti-push. Late-game, he can wipe out teams in a blink of an eye.

His only problem, aside from being melee, is mana. Being a strength hero with a low mana pool, he is vurnerable to mana burning skills. His skills require him to be in the middle of the battle to be most effective, and often without proper support he'll end up dead. Also, he is very vurnerable to silence.

Some choose to turn Raigor into a warrior, which I highly disagree with. You've got 3 stuns with Aftershock, a powerful ultimate, and skills with low cooldowns. He also has very low attack speed. Raigor is best played as a battle-caster, and this guide will focus on that. You won't be the carry hero, but will be able to provide tons of support, and maybe grab a triple kill or two.

3. Hero History

Raigor Stonehoof's model came from the Ladder Tauren from the Orcish race. Taurens are the strongest melee units of the Orcs. They have the Pulverize skill, which gives them a chance of dealing area effect damage on their attacks. Very simple units which, with some support, are able to decimate the ranks of the enemies. When roused, Tauren are fierce fighters and use their flails and horns alike to smash their enemies.

Note: Enchant Totem only increases BASE damage, along with damage gained from stats and stat items. Direct damage items such as Radiance, MKB, Divine Rapier, etc. are not affected. Damage is rounded up.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />

This build focuses on early game survival using stats and Fissure as a disable. You won't be going up close with enemies yet so Aftershock is taken later on, as by this time you'll be ganking and you'll be sticking to enemies. However, if you're faced with a melee opponent or you'd rather be more aggresive at the start, you can choose to get Aftershock early. One level of Enchant Totem is taken once Aftershock is maxed. We'll be using it mainly to stun, and the damage it adds is just a bonus. Echo Slam is taken whenever possible.

After level 16, you may choose to get Enchant Totem for added damage or get stats for more HP/mana. This is mainly because you'll be shooting for Refresher, and mana points are scarce with Raigor.

III. Item Build

1. Main Item Build

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" /> - Tangoes and Clarities

Ancient Tango of Essifation - 90 gold, 2 charges
Heals 7 HP per second for 25 second. 175 HP total healed.

Clarity Potion - 100 gold
Regenerates 100 mana over 30 seconds.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" /> - Arcane Ring

+300 Mana, + 3 Armor
Active: Restore 135 Mana in an area around the caster. 33 second cooldown.

Energy Booster - 1000 gold
Ring of Protection - 175 gold
Arcane Ring Recipe Scroll - 525 gold

Total Cost: 1700 gold

Raigor's gameplay revolves around his 2 key spells, Fissure and Echo Slam. Arcane Ring gives boosts his mana pool which is godsent for a strength caster like him. Though the mana regen is outstripped by Euls and Guinsoo later in the game, 300 mana early game means a lot. Replenishing your allies' mana is an added bonus.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" /> - Kelen's Dagger of Escape

Active: Allows the bearer to teleport within a distance of 700 range. 25 second cooldown.

Kelen's Dagger of Escape - 2150 gold

Blink Dagger is one of the most versatile items in DotA, and it works extremely well with Earthshaker. It allows you to get into a perfect position for Echo Slam. It also gives you an escape mechanism other than stun-and-run.

2. Optional Items

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" /> - Boots of Travel

Boots of Speed - 500 gold
Boots of Travel Recipe Scroll - 2,200 gold

+90 movement speed
Active: Teleport to allied unit or building, 60 Second Cooldown, 3 Second Cast Time

Total Cost: 2,700 gold

A staple on every hero, but not vital for Earthshaker's success. Still, this is a very recommended item after Blink Dagger. Your stuns scream out GANK, and with BoT you can be jumping around the map. Mobility + Map control is simply the UBERSEX for any hero.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" /> - Eul's Scepter of Divinity

Staff of Wizardry - 1000 gold
Void Stone - 900 gold
Mantle of Intelligence - 450 gold
Eul's Scepter of Divinity Recipe Scroll - 450 gold

+18 Intelligence (234 Mana)
+100% Mana Regen
Active: 4 Second Cyclone, 6 charges

Useful item if your team lacks disable, or if you're going to go Guinsoo. The cyclone charges allow Raigor to chain his low cooldown spells, or to get into a nice spot for an Echo Slam. Also, the regen Eul's provides can surpass Arcane's regen at 41.7 intelligence.

3. Late Game Items

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />
- Refresher Orb

Perseverance - 1775 gold
Oblivion Staff - 1925 gold
Refresher Orb Recipe Scroll - 1875 gold

+40 Damage
+150% Mana Regen
+4 HP Regen
Active: Refresh Ability Cooldowns, 210 second cooldown, 375 mana cost

Total Cost: 5575 gold

Penta-kills will come and down upon ye with this. Echo Slam is devastating if executed correctly, what more when done twice? The Perseverance helps out with regen when you're jumping around the map mid-game, and 40 damage is pretty good. If you can dish out your whole combo twice on the enemy team, you've just ensured a win.

Note: Echo Slam works on DEAD creeps which makes Refresher on Raigor so good.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" /> - Guinsoo's Scythe of Vyse

Eul's Scepter of Divnity - 2900 gold
Oblivion Staff - 1925 gold
Guinsoo's Scythe of Vyse Recipe Scroll - 450 gold

+35 Damage
+25 Intelligence (325 Mana)
+150% Mana Regen
Active: 3 second Polymorph, 23 second cooldown, 100 mana cost

Total Cost: 5175 gold

If you chose to go Eul's you'll be using a Guinsoo late game. The mana is helpful for Raigor's combo, the mana regen means you can spam Fissure at long range to loosen the enemies up. The 3 second hex means you've got 4 disable at hand, which is godly for you and your team. The 35 damage is pretty good for a caster.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" /> - Necronomicon

+6/10/14 Strength
+15/21/24 Intelligence
Active: Summon a Necronomicon Warrior and Archer for 35 seconds, 90 second cooldown, 50 mana cost
Can be upgraded by repurchasing the Recipe Scroll; 2 upgrades maximum.

Belt of Giant Strength - 450 gold
Staff of Wizardry - 1000 gold
Necronomicon Recipe Scroll - 1300 gold

Total Cost: 2750 / 4050 / 5350 gold

A uncommon build for Raigor which works quite well. It provides you with HP and Mana, and with some stuns and proper Fissure placement, you and your Necro summons will be beating down on your enemies. The speed boost given by the Necro Archer also helps your team out. For the exact stats of the Necronomicon Summons, check here.

4. Items to Avoid

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" /> - Battlefury
The regen does help, but that's it. Raigor isn't a DPS hero, he has slow attack speed, a lot of spells, and nothing to make him shine as a damage dealer. Aside from hitting the enemy once with Enchant Totem, there's nothing else you can do with a Battefury. Caster Raigor is the best way to play him.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" /> -
Lothar's Edge
Blink Dagger surpasses Lothar's in every single way. Blink is instant, cheaper, cannot be countered by true sight, and is just a lot more sexy.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" /> -
Mekansm
Raigor's mana pool is already extremely strained with all of his spells, so Mekansm should be left to the other heroes who can use it freely.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" /> -
Dagon
No. Just no. You have no use for this, and so does the other 80 or so heroes in DotA. You're a AoE expert, no need for single target spells.

IV. Strategy

1. Early Game

First of all, avoid soloing with Raigor. You have no lane control skills except for Fissure, which we WON'T be spamming early game. You've got a very limited mana pool and so we make our Fissures count. You potentially have an 8 second disable if you land a good fissure, and even at level 1, 8 seconds is enough to kill an enemy hero.

You're most likely to be laning with someone, and Raigor lanes best when paired with another disabler/nuker. Two disables basically spell death for a hero that can't escape. These following heroes are best laned with Raigor.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />

Of course, there's the dreaded Ezalor/Raigor combo, which provides Raigor with near-infinite mana for long range fissure harassment. Again, with proper Fissure placement, any hero who can pack a punch is a good lane partner for Raigor. But since you won't always be lucky enough to be laned with a good hero, or if you face a powerful combo in the lane, you have to play defensively.

If up against 2 disablers/nukers, play conservatively, stay far behind your creep line, and approach the creeps to last-hit or if you're against a powerful combo, just bob in for experience. Wait for the right moment to use your fissure, try your best to seperate the enemy heroes while trapping one. Only experience can teach you this. If you really can't fight back, you'll have to wade it out until you get your Arcane Ring.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />

However, there are times that you may compeletely dominate a lane. Against 2 melee heroes with no disable, all you need is a good Fissure trap (which will be discussed later) and you're almost guaranteed a kill. You may choose a Fissure/Aftershock build when you want to get up close to deal the most damage to your opponents.

Of course, focus on getting your Arcane Ring, as it is vital to Raigor's performance later on. You may also choose to go Euls or Necronomicon, however I strongly advocate getting Arcane as it gives you mana and mana regen for you and your team.

Again, don't forget the golden rule. Last hit and deny. Raigor has a simple attack animation, and is easy to get used to. Last-hitting and denying shouldn't be too hard as he also has pretty good base damage.

2. Mid Game

You should have either a Eul's, Necronomicon 1, or an Arcane Ring by this point. If not, do your best to get it. If you already have one of the core items, focus on getting a Blink Dagger. This is crucial to Earthshaker's positioning in terms of Echo Slam.

At this point in the game, try to bring at least 2 TP scrolls with you. You'll basically have to jump lanes in order to gank, and to use your Echo Slam. Look for agility heroes who have low HP to prey on. At level 11, a creep wave with 5 creeps and 1 hero deals 545 damage before magic resistance. Remember that Aftershock has a stun time, so you can sneak a few hits inbetween skills. However, if your opponent has an escape mechanism, blow out all your spells to make sure he doesn't get away.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />

But in higher level games, you'll be doing 3 things, ganking, pushing, and defending against pushes. All of which Raigor is extremely efficient at. Remember that Fissure has 1000 range, so you can soften up heroes even before the clash. Fissure offers a stun, a terrain block, and possibly a very good gank when used correctly.

And of course, Raigor is THE anti-push hero. If you see your enemies are gathering and starting to push, head to that lane to defend. Wait for the opportune momement when they're all bunched up, then unleash your combo. Blink Dagger is essential to pulling this off, once you're in, Echo Slam should really hurt (or obliterate them all), follow up with a Fissure (try your best to block) and your allies should have no problem taking out the weakened enemy team.

If your team isn't doing anything, farm. Boots of Travel, or Refresher Orb should be a goal. This makes sure that Raigor has a lot more to offer once late-game comes.

3. Late Game

Unlike other strength casters, Raigor is still a very powerful force to be reckoned with. With the update that causes creep waves to increase at certain time intervals, late-game triple-kills aren't a new thing to Raigor. More creeps simply means more Echo Slam damage. Also, you have 3 stuns, and still have Fissure to use.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />

You are the initiator of the team. When you push or defend, you're usually the first one in the fray. Make sure they know, as landing a perfect combo and seeing your team killing neutrals sucks. You also double as a tank, as once you blink in, you're the first one to be focused. That is a good thing, as once you unleash your combo, you've got nothing else to do, while your allies still have everything with them. Tank for the team, distract them from your main-DPS heroes and stun when you can.

With a Refresher, you should be able to rape the opponents when they push, as long as you can dish out your combo. Guinsoo provides you with near-unlimited Fissure spam, and Necronomicon should give you a nice fight after you blink in. Just push, support, and you should be able to win the game.
V. Advanced Strategy

1. Fissure

Fissure is Raigor's staple skill. It has a length of 1000 units and an approximate width of 200 units. The terrain block lasts for 8 seconds, and is considered part of the terrain. The Fissure block can actually be chopped down by Beastmaster's Wild Axes, but the animation of Fissure is still there.

Fissure is based on Impale, so it shares similar qualities. Unlike Impale, you cannot cut off Fissure while casting as the stun is instant. However, it means that when a unit is stunned by Lion and Nerubian's Impale, Sandking's Burrowstrike, Leviathan's Ravage, the stun will not stack and you will not be able to use Fissure on the enemy hero until the stun duration is over.

Concerning Linken's Sphere, it follows the rules of Impale as well. If you click Fissure directly on the hero, Linken's will block the damage and stun. However, if you click on the ground and the enemy hero gets hit, Linken's will not trigger.

Now, we start with the different ways on how to use Fissure.

A. Fissure Trap
This works well when you have a lane partner, so you can utilize the most out of the 8 second trap. Wait for the enemy hero to lag behind, position yourself and Fissure. The screenshot below illustrates the method:

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />

With the Fissure blocking the enemy Viper, he only has one way out, and that's through us (a Leshrac is behind me in the shot). Before he can even escape, he's going to pass through 2 heroes and creeps, basically killing him. The way the Fissure blocks the hero is perfect for killing early game, especially against melee heroes.

B. Fissure Block
The Fissure block is hard to pull off at times. You use Fissure to block the terrain, stopping either your enemies from chasing your allies or getting away. You block the enemy's way to your ally or their escape path. It gets harder as the enemy gets closer to your ally, as you risk blocking your ally's way out, or blocking your allies from getting to enemy.

C. Fissure Isolation
When teams clash, usually the tanks come in first to initiate. This is a perfect opportunity to use Fissure to isolate the enemy hero who charged in first. This often happens at your base while defending. The below screenshot demonstrates this.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />

Also, sometimes certain spells can be used to initiate, such as Swap, or those who blink in to cast. Fissure is also useful as it cuts off enemy support and though may leave your team damage, at least they are alive.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />

D. Fissure Stall
This is a commonly known tactic for delaying pushes. Simply lay down a Fissure that blocks the enemy creeps and heroes from advancing. This gives your team an extra 8 seconds to get your base and defend. Also, if done at certain points of the map, since Fissure's cooldown is only at 15 seconds, you can potentially delay a push for 16 seconds using 2 Fissures.

E. Fissure Snipe
Fissure actually stuns and damages a little further than the real animation. This means if you click Fissure in front of the enemy hero, you can hit him. This is useful when chasing, or when your enemy backs off when you approach.

F. Fissure Farming
Fissure, combined with Aftershock deals 390 damage to creeps. This is enough to wipe out the ranged line, or severly damage the melee creeps. Combined with one Enchant Totem, the damage goes up to 505. You can basically destroy a large creep wave using 2 spells.

Of course, using Fissure is not limited to these. Use your imagination, an 8 second wall can do a lot of things. May it be shifting creeps or even guarding Roshan, Fissure's uses are endless.

2. Echo Slam

Echo Slam is a bit hard to grasp at first. It basically has 2 stages. First, enemies within 500 AoE will get hit by the initial wave. All units hit by a initial wave will then release an echo wave that will affect enemies within 500 AoE. All units within 250 AoE of Raigor will be hit by the initial wave, and all echo waves. Basically, the more enemies near you, the better.

Every unit that is in the Echo Slam AoE will add to the damage. Illusions and summons are affected, so a large push means a world of hurt for your enemies. Also, magic-immune units, invisible units, dying units, and dead units are hit by Echo Slam, which means they also give out an echo wave. This is what makes Refresher on Raigor so powerful.

screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" />

For an idea on how powerful Echo Slam is when used correctly, say you blink into a group of 17 creeps and 3 heroes with a level 3 Echo Slam, you just dealt 1585 (before magic reduction) damage. That's more powerful than a Finger of Death, and you dealt that much damage to an area.

3. Refresher Orb

For Refresher Raigors, you'll usually end up blowing all your mana in one combo. And new players often find out that they don't have enough. So here's the mana you need to cast the following: Blink, Enchant Totem, Echo Slam, Fissure, Refresher Orb, Echo Slam, Enchant Totem, Fissure.

Full Combo: 1435 mana
Full Combo + Blink out: 1525 mana
Full Combo + 2 Arcane Ring Replenishes: 1215 mana
Full Combo + Blink out + 2 Arcane Ring Replenishes: 1305 mana

We'll focus on the combo with the Arcane Ring. Basically, you blink in with an Arcane Ring that is ready to use. Use all your skills then Arcane, Refresh, repeat combo, Arcane, Blink out. The values below show when you get 1305 mana, at what level and with an Arcane Ring and Refresher Orb.

Level 25: 1067 mana
Level 25 + Stats: 1327 mana
Level 21 + Stats + 2 Bracers: 1314 mana
Level 19 + Stats + 2 Nulls: 1314 mana

If you think the combo is too mana intensive, you could simply Echo-Refresh-Echo.

4. Blink Dagger

The so-called "new Aegis", the Blink Dagger. It's one of the most versatile items in DotA, as it can be used to initaite, chase, run away, and a lot more. This is part of Raigor's core build as it is vital to help him position himself for an Echo Slam.

Kelen's Dagger of Escape can teleport you at a maximum of 800 units, however, if you click beyond 800 units, you'll only teleport 650. To make the most out of the dagger, click somewhere near 800 units. Fissure is 1000 units long, so estimate how long 800 is to maximize the blink range.

A neat trick with Blink Dagger is to use Enchant Totem with it. Once Aftershock is maxed out, it gives Enchant Totem a 1.5 second stun. This is basically the same thing with Stomp heroes such as Bradwarden, Panda, or Slardar. You blink beside the opponent, and Enchant Totem. This is useful when your Fissure is on cooldown, or if you don't want to block your allies when chasing an opponent.

5. Worst Enemies

As discussed in the Strategy Section, the best allies of Raigor are disablers and nukers. However, early-game to late-game, Raigor has some opponents that can screw you up.

Mana burners. They can make your early-game like hell. No mana means no spells, and no spells means no Raigor. Even late-game, they can screw you as you may not have enough mana to complete your combo.

Nether Ward. You blow use up 1305 mana for your combo, and Nether Ward hits you with 1975 damage. Though you may avoid some as Nether Ward does have a cooldown, it can remove a big chunk of your HP.

Silence. You blink in to find yourself silenced, you die. Silencer is one of your worst enemies, as you can't chain your skills with him around, and that means no combo. Doom also, is a very long (and painful) silence, which can render you pretty much useless in the fight.

Ezalor. Mana Leak on you means you blink in without any mana left. Your best ally is also one of your worst enemies. Just be aware, and check your status bar if you've got Mana Leak on you before you rambo in.
